On Yi (Mind Intent) and Qi, etc.

August 29, 1999

  • On yi (intention) and qi: Yi is in the bones, and qi flows in the muscles. Relax the muscles, sink qi to dan-tien, but extend the bones. Many health problems come from the imbalance of qi. The balancing of qi makes a healthier body and improves one’s tai chi’s martial skills. tai chi has to do with the external forms and the internal requirements of yi and qi. Without grasping yi and qi, one does not grasp true tai chi.
  • Three naturals when doing zhan zhuang (horse stance): intention natural, posture natural, breathing natural.
  • Practice the forms without interruptions between movements: like moving clouds and smooth running waters.
